The Scarlet Pimpernel

2 November 2021

At long last I have begun to read the phenomenal novel, The Scarlet Pimpernel, by Baroness Emmuska Orczy. Last November, I vowed to spend some time with this fiction (See the Scarlet Pumpernickel). This evening, I began this literary journey.

It is a hoot!

The first three words on Page 1 of Chapter I provide me with more information than I can presently ever get from any online “news” article!

Paris: September, 1792

The Scarlet Pimpernel - Chapter 1

The first chapter proved such an enticing treasure of words and images that I decided to offer my dramatic reading of the first few pages. The usage by the Baroness of the word, aristo, is so ticklishly enchanting that I’ve begun to use it in conjunction with the modern-day progressives, whom I now refer to as: progresso-aristos.

While the progresso-aristos are feasting upon one another for breakfast/lunch/dinner, I shall partake of Progresso soup, and dine in style in my country abode. One bowl satiates me!

The blood lust for power, however, now, as then, knows no satiety. We patriots might as well learn what we can from the not-so-fine and not-so-young cannibals. We dare to laugh whilst we must, from the lessons of the past.

The Baroness invites everyone wishing to thrive to enjoy her instant hit of 1905.
